Il nostro programma inizierà con una visita del Museo bizantino e cristiano, un luogo dove sono conservati tesori che abbracciano secoli! Situato nel cuore di Atene, il Museo ha più di 25.000 oggetti in suo possesso, dal III al XV secolo oggi disposti in collezioni. C'è una nuova galleria la post-bizantina che raccolglie gli oggetti dal XVI al XX secolo. Le esposizioni hanno per oggetto la Grecia, Asia Minore e i Balcani. Sculture, icone, miniature, affreschi, ceramiche e tessuti, manoscritti, schizzi, anthivola (disegni preparatori), incisioni e incunaboli, nonché riproduzioni di affreschi bizantini e post-bizantini e mosaici, possono essere ammirati nelle vetrine di questo museo.

Altra tappa sarà il Monastero di Kaissariani. Il monastero fu costruito nel XI secolo sulle rovine di una chiesa cristiana del quinto secolo.

Our suggested program will start with a visit to the Byzantine and Christian Museum, a place where treasures spanning centuries is kept: the treasure of an imperial past and a cultural heritage that opened the way to Europe's future. Situated right at the heart of Athens, the Museum has more than 25,000 artifacts in its possession, originating from the 3rd to the 15th century and arranged in collections. A new gallery featuring the post-Byzantine collection with objects from the 16th to the 20th century is due to open soon. The exhibits are mainly from Greece, Asia Minor and the Balkans. Sculptures, icons, miniatures, frescoes, pottery and fabrics, manuscripts, sketches, anthivola (preparatory drawings), etchings and incunabula, as well as reproductions of Byzantine and post-Byzantine frescoes and mosaics, can be seen in the show-cases of the Museum.

We will then head to the Monastery of Kaissariani, which lies at a short distance to the east of Athens, on a hillside at the foot of Mt. Hymettos. The monastery was built in the 11th century over the ruins of a 5th-century Christian church that was also built over a temple (of the Greek goddess Demeter). The monks supported themselves by keeping bees and selling the honey, much as some religious orders today sell jams or liqueurs. The monastery's kitchen and refectory, which now house sculptural fragments, are on the west side of a paved, flower-filled courtyard. To the south, the old monks' cells and a bathhouse are being restored (exploration at your own risk is usually permitted). The well-preserved church, built like so many others in Greece in the shape of a Greek cross, has a dome supported by four ancient Roman columns. Most of the frescoes are relatively late, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries; the distinctive bell tower is from the 19th century.
